It has been just over 14 months since Directioners heard the first One Direction member go solo, with Zayn Malik releasing "Pillowtalk" on January 29, 2016. In the time since, we've seen three other members embark on their own solo journeys: Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and, most recently, Harry Styles, who released "Sign of the Times" today (April 7).
Although the guys' voices came together in perfect harmony on their hits together as One Direction, once they were able to create their own material, each of them actually went in fairly different directions. Malik's single (and subsequent album, Mind of Mine) was more R&B-tinged, and next-in-line Horan brought an acoustic singer-songwriter vibe with "This Town." Then, Tomlinson surprised the world with a Steve Aoki collaboration fit for any dance floor, while Styles' latest addition stems from a more rock era, with influences from David Bowie and Pink Floyd.
While it may be a bit strange to see the 1D members do such different things on their own -- and who knows what musical path final member Liam Payne will take once he delivers a solo single? -- it is fun to hear them make the kind of tunes they've always imagined.
But who did the best job at breaking into their solo career? Vote in the poll below to tell us which One Direction member you think had the best debut solo single.
