Mayer Hawthorne's new album Where Does This Door Go is out next month, and in this clip from his new short documentary Behind the Door, the soulful singer gives a peek into his new music and working with Pharrell. The pair trade ideas in the booth, grooving on a "Hey, Ho" chant and working out the instrumentals. Hawthorne discusses effective storytelling with Pharrell and toys with a Roland keyboard to work out his hooks.
"There's no other guy like him that has his voice and has that story," Pharrell says. "[It's] a really great story. Wait until you guys hear it . . . His fucking album's a book. It's good."
Where Does This Door Go is due July 16th, and features production from Pharrell, Greg Wells, Jack Splash and Oak. Mayer Hawthorne will kick off a North American tour on July 12th at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis. For more information, visit Mayer Hawthorne's website.
