Happy (almost) Halloween! It's that time of year again where we at Billboard Style help you break down the best musically inclined costumes for October's greatest holiday. While we haven't heard from Lorde in a bit, this is the perfect time for a #ThrowbackThursday costume post. Keep reading for an easy, three-step routine on how to look absolutely royal.
Step 1: Eyes
Lorde doesn't wear a ton of makeup in the "Royals" music video, which was done by Amber Dreadon, and the lip is toned down compared to her "Tennis Court" berry red. But what's still very Lorde-esque is the black winged eye, almost mimicking the curve of her lashes.
To get this look, hold a straight edge, like your eye pencil, vertical against the middle of your eye, tilting it diagonally away from your tear duct until the point reaches where your lashes meet. Make a dot where you want the tip of the wing to come together, parallel to where the eyebrow ends and halfway between the browbone and lashline.
Using a liquid liner, like Kat Von D's Tattoo Liner, draw a line from the dot curving upward into your crease. Stop in the middle of your crease. Keeping your eye closed, complete the triangle by drawing another line from the dot sloping into your lashline, filling the point of the triangle in with a black eye pencil.
For an easy ombre effect, press black eye shadow into the corner of the triangle and, taking a clean eyeshadow brush, lightly sweep the color horizontally across the lid. Press a pearly highlighter, like RMS Living Luminizer, where the brushstoke ends (if you want a quick fix, use an eye shadow trio like Smashbox Photo Op Eye Shadow Trio in Dark Room). Using the same black pencil, dot your lower lash line up to the middle of your eye, being careful to not line your waterline. Top it off with three to four coats of thickening mascara, like Clinque's Lash Doubling Mascara (or false lashes since it is Halloween, after all).

Step 2: Face
Lorde is known for her pale face, so we suggest minimal contour and bronzer. Instead, opt for a mattifying tinted moisturizer, like Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint in a shade lighter than your skin tone, and a baby-pink blush, like Dior's Rosy Glow Healthy Glow Awakening Blush in Petal Pink Rose, on the apples of your cheeks, sweeping upward along the cheekbone to your hairline. Keep the eyebrows defined and clean with a wax-based eyebrow pomade. Our favorite is Anastasia Beverly Hills DipBrow Pomade paired with the Anastasia Beverly Hills brush in #12.

Step 3: Hair
If you have naturally curly hair, you're golden! If not, spray your whole head with a texturizing spray to prep the hair, then section pieces off in 1-inch sections. Using the small end of your curling iron, wrap the hair around the wand, alternating direction every other curl. You don't want beachy waves if you're Lorde, so make the curls tighter at first and brush them out as they cool.
