New This Week: Little Big Town, Old 97’s, Thundercat, and More

Searching for something to listen to this weekend? Yahoo Music has you covered with a rundown of some of this week’s biggest/buzzing releases, including Little Big Town, Old 97’s, Thundercat, and more. Check back every Friday for a fresh list of albums to help fuel your weekend playlists.

Little Big Town: The Breaker (Capitol Nashville). The country powerhouse quartet are on their seventh studio release, and it features a lead single penned by Taylor Swift (“Better Man”). The introspective theme of the record explores the concept of “breaking” – be it breaking free, breaking through, or feeling broken.

Future: HNDRXX (Epic). It’s been a busy 2017 for Future, and we’re not even into March yet. After dropping his seventh album just last week — his first solo project since releasing EVOL in 2016 – the rapper followed up swiftly with this set, which features guest appearances from the Weeknd and Rihanna.

John Mayer: The Search for Everything: Wave Two (Columbia). Mayer dropped four new songs last month, and followed that up just a few short weeks later with a late Valentine for fans – four more songs to further round out his 2017 offerings. The full album in its entirety will drop in April.

Old 97’s: Graveyard Whistling (ATO). The Texas band – which has been together since the early ‘90s – leans more toward country on its 11th release than it has in years. Pedal steel touches are always handy when going for this approach, but a solidifying standout is whip-cracking lead single “Good With God,” which features strong vocals from guest star Brandi Carlile.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah: The Tourist (CYHSY, Inc.). Alec Ounsworth’s latest album is a study in tumultuous emotion, adding a little more guitar, a little more sharpness, and a lot more sonic chaos – including double-tracked vocals, echo effects, and fierce jams.

Modern English: Take Me to the Trees (Inkind Music). Yes – this is the band you are thinking of; and yes, it’s been a long time since we’ve heard from them. The last release from the latest lineup of Modern English was a full three decades ago. The new album takes the band back to its roots, with co-production from ‘80s producer Martyn Young helping the retro feel along nicely.

Dirty Projectors: Dirty Projectors (Domino). Producer, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist David Longstreth helms up this latest album four years after the band’s Swing Lo Magellan. As always, he’s great at rounding up a formidable crew of contributors: Here he includes Solange Knowles, Tyondai Braxton, Mauro Refosco (Atoms For Peace, Red Hot Chili Peppers), and Dawn Richard (D∆WN and Danity Kane).

Thundercat: Drunk (Brainfeeder). After gaining national attention following his Grammy award-winning collaborations on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly, Stephen Bruner, aka Thundercat, holds nothing back on his latest release. Collaborators on the LP include Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus, Kamasi Washington, Pharrell, Wiz Khalifa, Kenny Loggins, and Michael McDonald – be prepared for an aural journey.
