Matt McAndrew Plays L.A. Show in Hospital Gown With Dislocated Shoulder: Watch

When Matt McAndrew performed his first Los Angeles concert since placing second on The Voice Season 7 last year, he knew it would be an eventful and memorable evening. But surely he didn’t expect to be playing the Sunset Strip’s fabled Roxy club in a paper hospital gown.

When the curtain raised at the Roxy Tuesday night, fans were surprised to see McAndrew seated with his right arm immobilized and resting on a towel, his sister/tour manager Meredith playing nursemaid at his side, as he explained that he’d gotten in an unfortunate skateboard accident just a couple hours before the big gig.

“[Meredith’s] job for the past hour or so since the big wreck – we call it ‘the big wreck’ – has been to just hold my arm up while I complain,” he quipped, telling the audience that there’d be no post-show meet-and-greet, since he’d be heading straight from the stage to the ER. “Has anybody ever dislocated their shoulder before? I hear it’s gonna suck when they put it back in.”

“I did soundcheck and was on my way to get food when I decided to grab my friend’s skateboard and bomb a hill,” Matt later told Yahoo Music’s Reality Rocks. “Trucks were loose; I got speed wobbles; I fell and dislocated my shoulder. I went to urgent care and got X-rays… I was supposed to go to ER, but played the show first.”

McAndrew was quite the trooper during his 40-minute set, which included new tunes from his forthcoming Republic Records release, tracks off his 2014 independent album View of the Pines, and covers of Hozier’s “Take Me to Church” and Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode.” He concluded with his No. 1 Voice single “Wasted Love” before hobbling off the Roxy stage, bidding fans farewell with “See you at the emergency room!”

I have to say, Matt really rocked that hospital-gown-and-skinny-jeans look. He may have set a new fashion trend: ER chic. And as a side note, is it possible the Roxy has a Voice curse? We all remember what McAndrew’s Voice coach, Adam Levine, had to say about the place in a bizarre on-air rant during Season 3.

While Matt heals, which will hopefully be very soon, check out a couple able-shouldered, acoustic performances he gave earlier this year at Yahoo Music:
