Model Luka Sabbat is proof that though his profession is one based on visual aesthetics, music often heavily influences fashion (and vice-versa). At 19, his young career is already one that branches from Dolce & Gabbana and Off-White runways to jewelry designing and being a consultant for artists in the music industry.
Sabbat, who's modeled in several of Kanye West's fashion shows, called Billboard from his New York City apartment and talked to us about why West's latest Yeezy presentation was his best, why John Mayer's style is surprisingly awesome, and how festival fans should dress when they hit Coachella-like concerts this summer.
When you're shooting for magazines or brands, what music do you like to hear?
Usually on shoots, I'll play a lot of trap music just to keep it high energy, because after a few hours I usually get tired or bored. So something more upbeat to keep me on my toes. Chief Keef and Young Thug. The list goes on.
Of the fashion shows you've walked, which had the best playlist?
Off-White. [Designer] Virgil [Abloh] always has some speech that sounds cool, some classical music and some trap music. At one show he played "T-Shirt" by Migos, but a cappella. It was so crazy.
Who's an artist out there that you think has great style?
Young Thug's style is pretty crazy right now. His music and style kind of go hand-in-hand.
Kanye West's Yeezy Season 5 show was a huge success, which was a huge comeback victory because last season's show was panned for its lack of organization. You modeled in the Season 5. Why do you think it was such a win?
With this show, everything was more organized. The set of the show was quite simplistic but hadn't been done before with the screen and those models. It was aesthetically pleasing. With Season 1, 2 and 3 the clothes were cool in that setting for the show. But if you took them out of that setting, into the streets, they wouldn't really work. They weren't really clothes you could wear every day. Season 4 was good! But all the bad press overshadowed it. People didn't get a chance to see them up close. People heard so many negative things about the show. Season 5 had the best execution and style-wise it just made the most sense.
You do styling as well, right?
Whenever I need to. I'll style a lot of the homies. I like styling females more than males. You can put them in women's clothes or men's clothes.
Do you go to concerts often?
[Kanye West's Saint] Pablo show was insane! I'm a fan of good shows. I'm going to Philly to see John Mayer today with my friend.

Are you familiar with John's love of Visvim?
Yeah, he's got one of the biggest Visvim collections. He goes crazy. John Mayer has ill swag. It's unexpected, but it's also super calm. He's never done too much [when it comes to dressing]. Usually, for artists who are that big who aren't rappers, people are surprised when they can actually dress. They think only rappers can have style. He broke that whole wave. Like, "Yo, it's lit for me, too." I like his shit. But I know more about his style - like him wearing BAPE and Visvim - than I do about his music.
Any other concerts on your wish list?
I've always wanted to see Aphex Twin. He rarely ever goes on tour. I really want to go see that. I definitely want to see Frank [Ocean], too. I might have to go to a festival to see him. I think I'm going to see Gorillaz. And Daft Punk!
Music festival season in coming up. What would you suggest people wear this summer?
It's different for girls, because they care what they look like at festivals. But really, just wear a white tee, some jeans and a pair of sneakers that you can fuck up. You're at a festival, not fashion week. Some people do too much and get mad when their clothes get fucked up. Nobody came out to see your outfit. We came to see the artists.
Random people always ask me if I'm a rapper,
Don't let my jewelry deceive you- luka fallback sabbat (@whoisluka) April 2, 2017
On Twitter, you mentioned that people mistake you for a rapper, because of your jewelry.
I wear a bunch of shit, but it's mostly subtle. It's not all ice. I wear a lot of skulls that have diamonds in the eyes. And they're white gold and silver. A lot of my stuff are things that I made. I make it look old. Some parts will look grayish black. It looks like it aged. And my stuff isn't big. But I'll put a lot of pendants on one chain, so it looks more ornamental than someone wearing mad chains. Because I could have way more chains. But instead, I'll just put three on one chain, two on another, three on another.

I just got this piece from Ben Baller. It's this white gold Jesus piece. But I don't wear it on a long chain. I put it on a chocker. And I lay all of my other chains on it, so it's like it's in the cut. It's not in the forefront. All my chains are over that. It's over in the back. I like to take the most important piece and make it look unimportant.
What do you have coming up this year that you're excited about?
I'm just working on Hot Mess and more content. At one point, I want to start making furniture. And I'm going to do more shows. I have a gallery show in LA this October. I'll do more gallery shows at crazy locations and I'll be shooting more stuff.
