Lorde's new song "Green Light," released at 2 p.m. ET Thursday (March 3), debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard + Twitter Trending 140 chart almost immediately after. The song is the first preview of her upcoming album Melodrama, due later this year. The track was co-produced by Jack Antonoff (of fun.), who has reportedly worked on most of Melodrama with Lorde.
The Billboard + Twitter Trending 140 chart measures the real-time acceleration of conversation around artists and their music on Twitter.
"Green Light" is the 20-year-old singer-songwriter's first release since her contribution to the soundtrack of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1, "Yellow Flicker Beat," which peaked at No. 34 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 2014. Her Grammy-winning single "Royals" spent nine weeks atop the chart beginning Oct. 12, 2013, and her breakthrough album, Pure Heroine, peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 that same month. The album has sold 1.7 million copies in the U.S. to date, according to Nielsen Music.
Lorde is clearly excited about the end of her hiatus, tweeting, "OMG it's today i could vomit" and "finally, here it is" on Thursday. She'll appear as the musical guest on NBC's Saturday Night Live on March 11.
