LMFAO’s Redfoo on Solo Album, Motown Lineage, and Playing the Super Bowl With Madonna

Redfoo, half of the electronic/party-rap duo LMFAO, is always turnt up in his music videos for monster records, like “I’m in Miami Bitch,” “Party Rock Anthem,” and his latest, “Juicy Wiggle.” But his forthcoming solo album, Where the Sun Goes, will introduce another side of his persona, the rapper-producer explains during an interview at Yahoo Music.

Though the energy will still be upbeat as it’s been on the album’s singles thus far, expect deeper song lyrics and live instrumentation. “It’s gonna talk about when I like a certain girl, a little more intimate, where you can sing this song to your girl,” he says. Musically, he’s planning to tour with a band and sometimes sing and rap from the piano. In the music video for “Juicy Wiggle,” he’s playing a zebra-stripped baby grand, Jerry Lee Lewis-style.

In the past, Redfoo and Sky Blu didn’t feel the need to emphasize their musicianship, preferring to focus on their party-animal instincts. And it worked. “Party Rock Anthem” is one of the five biggest songs in the history of Billboard magazine.

But now that the music scene is saturated with similar party records, Redfoo feels the need to distinguish himself from his contemporaries.

During his in-depth interview with Yahoo Music, he recalls what it was like being the son of legendary Motown founder Berry Gordy, whether his father gets his music, being the first contestant axed from Dancing With the Stars, carrying Madonna on his shoulders during her Super Bowl halftime show, and allowing his childhood best friend, will.i.am, to use his home studio to make the demo tape that landed the Black Eyed Peas their record deal with Interscope.
