Hip-hop has deep roots in NYC. The genre traversed all of the boroughs before stretching nationally and now globally as it does today, but it’s agreed upon that it all started in the Bronx. There have been some disputes as to who in the Bronx started the phenomenon, but a name that inevitably enters that discussion, usually very early on, is DJ Kool Herc. Herc was among the first to isolate the instrumental breaks in disco and funk records and spin them at parties. He claims to have thrown the first hip-hop party in 1973 in his tiny apartment at 1520 Sedgwick Ave.

Bronx City Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson’s office has taken the step of solidifying Herc’s legacy as a one of hip-hop’s founding fathers by co-naming a stretch of the Bronx’s Sedgwick Ave “Hip-Hop Boulevard.” According to councilwoman Gibson, her office didn’t receive any complaints or disputes to the renaming as she told DNAinfo , adding, “The street co-naming always passes.”
