Sanriopalooza! Welcome to the Hello Kitty Supercute Friendship Festival

Bonnaroo may be this weekend, for all intents and purposes kicking off summer festival season. But for Sanrio fans, the only festival that matters is the Hello Kitty Supercute Friendship Festival, taking place this weekend at Los Angeles’s recently refurbished Fabulous Forum before moving on to a supercute city near you, as Hello Kitty and her fluffy friends embark on their first-ever live North American tour.

The family-friendly festival isn’t exactly edgy or indie-rock, and attendees are more likely to wear giant red bows than flower crowns. But the music selected for the different onstage vignettes, by producer Joe Pileggi, is surprisingly cool — including tracks by Daft Punk, Junior Senior, the Rolling Stones, Katy Perry, DJ Cassidy, Nena, Justin Timberlake, Don Ho, and even a forgotten gem off the Grease 2 soundtrack.

There are even two original songs written exclusively for the Hello Kitty Supercute Friendship Festival: “Small Gift, Big Smile,” by Amy Powers and Matt Tishler, and “Share a Smile Rock the World,” by Gabriel Mann and Jeannie Lurie. It’s all so very Kittyrific!

And the Supercute fashions, of course, totally trump “Coachella style,” hands (or paws) down:
