Kid Rock Admits Senate Bid Was a Joke: ‘F— No, I’m Not Running’ (Listen)
To the surprise of hardly anyone, Kid Rock quashed his highly publicized but hardly serious bid to run for Senator in an interview with Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio show Tuesday morning.
“F— no, I’m not running for Senate. Are you kidding me?” Rock said. “Who couldn’t figure that out? I’m releasing a new album. I’m going on tour too. Are you f—ing s—ting me?”
The rocker, whose “Sweet Southern Sugar” album is out Nov. 3, talked further about the bid, which amounts to a stunt. “It’s the worst advice I ever gave myself, but it’s been the most creative thing I’ve ever done,” he said. “And I’ve gotten to see everyone’s true colors.”
He said as the stunt gathered steam, even people on his team who were “in on the joke” began to take it seriously. He reminded them: “No, we’re not doing it — but let’s roll with it for a while.”
In July, Rock said that a website — kidrockforsenate.com —selling campaign T-shirts, yard signs, hats, and bumper stickers, was authentic. “Are you scared?” reads one of its headlines, along with a number of other slogans from his lyrics.
The speculation was that the singer, whose birth name is Robert Ritchie, would run for a seat in Michigan to unseat Debbie Stabenow, who is up for re-election in 2018. A proud right-winger and Trump supporter, he visited the White House, along with Sarah Palin and Ted Nugent, and performed at an event during the Republican National Convention.
