Katy Perry Performs Alongside Victim of Domestic Abuse at 2015 Grammys

Famous for her rainbow-bright energy and delightfully cartoonish stage antics (we see you, Left Shark!), Katy Perry on Sunday opted for a more serious, emotional vibe at the 57th annual Grammy Awards.

Following a powerful video message from President Barack Obama about domestic abuse, Perry — draped in a long white gown — took to the stage to sing “By the Grace of God,” a ballad about an unhealthy relationship off her 2013 album Prism.

Additionally, Perry was joined on stage by Texas-based domestic abuse survivor Brooke Axtell, who performed a written-word piece about her personal experience in a violent relationship.

“Authentic love does not devalue a human being,” Axtell said. “If you’re in a relationship with someone who does not honor and respect you, I want you to know you are worthy of love. Please reach out for help; your voice will save you.”

It was heavy, and it was important.

“It’s an honor to collaborate with Katy in this way,” Axtell recently told People. “She has been very devoted to various aspects of female empowerment. It’s going to bring a lot of encouragement and freedom to those who hear my story and know that they are not alone in this.”
