Kanye Claims ‘Voices’ Told Him to Interrupt Beck’s Grammy Moment

When Kanye walked on stage Sunday at the 57th annual Grammy Awards to object to Beck winning Album of the Year, his antics mirrored his behavior at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards when he pulled a similar stunt on Taylor Swift. The Yeezus rapper explained his actions Wednesday during an interview on On Air With Ryan Seacrest.

“So the voices in my head told me go and then I just walked up like halfway up the stage,” he told Seacrest. “You know, what I really wanted to do is just joke around about what had happened before, but I just really didn’t want to take away from Beck’s moment or the time he’s having to talk because you know the Grammys, they play music really quick no matter who you are and everything.”

Though West says his intention was to make a joke, he was not laughing after the show when he told E! that Beck did not deserve the win. “Beck needs to respect artistry, and he should have given his award to Beyoné,” West said. “I just know that the Grammys, if they want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us. We ain’t gonna play with them no more.”

During his interview with Seacrest, Kanye attempted to clarify the statements he made about Beck. “Well, first of all, Beck is one of the nicest guys and one of the most respected musicians in the game,” he explained. “So, there’s nothing that I will want to do as a fellow musician to disrespect him in any way. And the weird thing is, I don’t feel like I have the right to take away from people’s moments.”

West then compared the results of his actions to that of a chiropractor after successfully remedying a crook. “And then you know, everyone feels better after the fact,” he said, “or everyone is way more famous after the fact, or everyone sells way more albums after the fact, and then Kanye just goes on being an a--hole to everyone.”

Beck took the high road when addressing the scenario. “I was just so excited he was coming up,” Beck said. “He deserves to be on stage as much as anybody. How many great records has he put out in the last five years, right?”

Swift has apparently also forgiven West. On Sunday, West and Swift had made amends and the two took happy photos together at the Grammys. According to West, he and the 1989 singer are planning to make music together. “Yeah, she want to get in the studio, and we’re definitely going to go in,” he told Seacrest. “Any artist with an amazing point of view, perspective, fan base, I’m down to get in the studio and work.”

In 2013, West also claimed that he and Miley Cyrus be recording together, but music never materialized. In other words, we’ll believe this one when we hear it.
