Johnny Depp at Glastonbury: “When Was the Last Time an Actor Assassinated a President?”
Johnny Depp was on site to haunt the Glastonbury Festival this weekend, and to introduce a screening of his 2004 film The Libertine. During his speech, Depp, a 52-year-old man covered in various trinkets, mentioned Donald Trump and then stone-facedly asked the audience: “When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?” After some tentative cheers, Depp explained: “Let me clarify: I’m not an actor. I lie for a living.”
It’s unclear if Depp was implicitly referencing John Wilkes Booth in his comments, but he did appear to realize that it wouldn’t be the first time a thespian took down the leader of the free world. “It’s been a while, and maybe it’s time,” Deep rambled, dead-eyed.
Perhaps the best time for Depp to get off his high-school-anarchists-during-their-lunch-period joke was not just a week after the shooting in Alexandria, Virginia that left four people wounded, including a Republican congressmen. Depp has always been one to live his own truth, but, needless to say, Fox News will not be pleased.
