My Morning Jacket's Jim James linked up with John Oates for this year's Superjam at Bonnaroo, digging into a diverse set that featured cuts by John Lennon, Prince and Sly and the Family Stone and guests including R. Kelly and Brittany Howard from Alabama Shakes. However, despite the carefree vibe of the session, an incredible amount of work preceded the celebration. In this exclusive clip (the first of an eight-part series), James, Oates and others reflect on the process and jam out on Lennon's "Instant Karma."
"You just kind of walk off from that. . . literally feeling like you just won the Super Bowl or something because it was such a battle," James tells Rolling Stone. "The whole thing was such a fucking battle. . . there's so much involved in trying to make it work. And then when it actually does work, you really just feel so victorious."
