Jhené Aiko: Casting My Ex in New Video Was a No-Brainer

Jhené Aiko’s latest video “Spotless Mind” features a couple who’ve grown apart, and the lyric, “Shame on me for changing/No, no, no/Shame on you for staying the same.” The interesting part? It features her real life ex-boyfriend O’Ryan Browner—who’s also a singer and younger brother of R&B star Omarion.

Jhené says O’Ryan, who is also the father of her daughter, was an obvious pick for the video. “It was a first thought by me and a few other people on my team,” Jhené tells Yahoo Music. “We were all dancing around. We didn’t want people to be confused, but he’s acted in the past, and he’s very expressive. When it came down to it, I thought it would be great. Obviously, we know each other well. It had to be someone I was comfortable with, and I wanted it to be funny.”

Jhené says their six-year-old daughter Namiko loves the video. “She was there for part of the day,” Jhené says. “She’s around both of us a lot. She sees us interact in a friendly way. We’re not in a bad place. We’re still friends. She understands and she loves the video.”

Jhené competed for three Grammy awards this Sunday, Best R&B Song, Best Urban Contemporary Album, and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.
