Jazmine Sullivan Performs ‘Stupid Girl’ at Yahoo

During a stop by the Yahoo Music offices, Jazmine Sullivan performs an acoustic rendition of her song “Stupid Girl,” a selection from Reality Show, her third album.

The song that addresses women losing themselves in love falls right in line with the album title and Sullivan’s success thus far. Some of her biggest hits have storylines befitting of a reality television show score.

Sullivan has sung about breaking the car windows of a cheating beau (“Bust Your Windows”), admitting to her own indiscretions (“I’m in Love With Another Man”), plus on-and-off relationships (“Holding You Down (Goin’ in Circles)”). Despite her Reality Show title, and love for watching others wreak havoc for the world to see, the Philadelphia singer isn’t sure she’s best suited for unscripted TV.

“I like my privacy and sometimes you can show too much to people and then you get judged,” Sullivan tells Yahoo Music during an exclusive on-camera interview.

Sullivan immersed herself into the world of TV drama during her break between 2010’s Love Me Back and Reality Show. “I became addicted to all things reality,” she explains. “I don’t think I watch a regular show. I just got addicted to the drama. … I thought you was supposed to hide that kind of stuff.”

In her personal life, Sullivan was dealing with her own issues. During her hiatus, she even contemplated quitting the music business. Soul searching helped get her back on track. “I just kinda got to the point where I was just accepting of myself, my flaws and all,” she says. “I’m still a work in progress. You have to love yourself. So what if I’m not this and I’m not that.”

Though her record label did not pressure her to rush back to recording, when she did return to the studio, the process was cathartic. “It was therapeutic for me to go and start working on an album,” she says. “On some, I cried out. Some songs helped me write about other things. Music is therapeutic.”

Watch Sullivan’s interview to see her discuss some of her new songs – “Mascara,” a record she was inspired to write after perusing the Instagram pages of video models; and “Forever Don’t Last,” a personal track about not wanting to let go of a relationship. Additionally, Sullivan shares details of meeting Lauryn Hill and President Obama, and having her song “Bust Your Windows” covered on Glee.
