Jacob Banks is the throaty singer-songwriter critics say can save soul music and introduce it to a new generation. His EP, The Boy Who Cried Freedom, dropped Thursday (April 20) across all digital streams and retailers. It's five tracks are an arresting aural image of America's muddy ghosts warped through the filters of modern electronics.
He sings with a deep, soulful grit traditionally felt in the dirty Delta, but Banks was born in Nigeria and came of age in Birmingham, England. His production sends those Gospel shivers up your spine with plenty of piano and electric guitar, but it's bolstered by digital touches that make Banks enough of a hybrid artist to please both sides of the electric vs. analog aisle.
The Boy Who Cried Freedom is plain, old-fashioned, great music. It resonates in your head and your soul. Listen to the full EP and see his upcoming tour dates below.
