J. Cole Executive Producing New PBS Documentary

Raising Bertie follows “three African American boys as they face a precarious coming of age in rural Bertie County, North Carolina”

J. Cole is one of the executive producers for a documentary film called Raising Bertie, which is set to premiere August 28 on PBS as part of their POV series. He’s joined director and producer Margaret Byrne to tell the story of “three African American boys as they face a precarious coming of age in rural Bertie County, North Carolina.” Raising Bertie was filmed over a course of six years and follows the lives of Reginald “Junior” Askew, Davonte “Dada” Harrell, and David “Bud” Perry. “I didn't want to focus on stories of the exceptional,” said Byrne. “The truth is, I made a film about three kids I met and I cared about. The individuals in this story are representative of their community and they matter.” Find the official trailer below.

This isn’t J. Cole’s first foray into filmmaking. Earlier this year, he premiered his latest HBO documentary special 4 Your Eyez Only, which follows the making of his 2016 album of the same name. Prior to that, he shared his 40-minute film called Eyez. His first HBO special arrived in 2015, which is based on 2014’s Forest Hills Drive.
