Fun Fun! See Punk Legends John Doe & Steve Jones Cover ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll High School’ at Ramones Tribute

Linda Ramone, widow of Ramones guitarist Johnny Ramone, hosted her annual Johnny Ramone Tribute bash Sunday at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, the famous final resting place of both Johnny and Dee Dee Ramone. The event, also celebrating the pioneering punk band’s 40th anniversary, attracted a wide array of celebrity guests (Rosanna Arquette, Pete Yorn, Dominic Monahan), with Henry Rollins kicking off the festivities with a gushing speech about his lifelong Ramones fandom.

Also on hand was X frontman John Doe, who moderated a lively panel discussion with Rock ‘N’ Roll High School actors PJ Soles, Mary Woronov, Clint Howard, Vince Van Patten, and Dey Young, producer Roger Corman, and directors Allen Arkush and Joe Dante — the beloved cult flick’s first such cast and crew reunion in 30 years.

However, one of the most pleasant surprises of the night was a ramshackle acoustic duet of that film’s title track by Doe and the Sex Pistols’ Steve Jones, before an outdoor screening on the cemetery’s Fairbanks Lawn. (Jones also introduced the other feature presentation of the evening, Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains, a 1982 pre-Riot Grrl punk flick starring Jones, Pistols drummer Paul Cook, the Clash’s Paul Simonon, the Tubes’ Fee Waybill, Diane Lane, and Laura Dern.) Doe and Jones’s seemingly under-rehearsed, completely mush-mouthed performance of “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School” was nothing if not punk-rock, and it was definitely fun fun. Surely the late Johnny, Joey, and Dee Dee would approve.
