The Foo Fighters come 'full circle' on 'Carpool Karaoke'

The Foo Fighters crammed into James Corden’s minivan on The Late Late Show for a rocking “Carpool Karaoke.” But this wasn’t the first time the Foos have karaoked. The first person to join Dave Grohl in the band was bass player Nate Mendel. While the two were reminiscing about their meeting for the first time, Mendel said, “I remember the first time we jammed I was playing through a karaoke machine in your living room.” The fact that they were telling that story while filming “Carpool Karaoke “didn’t get past Grohl, who quickly yelled, “Full circle!” toward Corden.

Jammin’ out

The guys jammed out to some of the classics, like “All My Life” and “Learn to Fly,” before singing their new single, “Sky Is a Neighborhood.” But Mendel was still getting used to the new tune, saying, “There’s a lot of words in that song.” Grohl joked, “I worked really hard on that, you guys!” While Corden thought it was funny that Mendel was surprised by the amount of words, telling him, “I love that that’s your takeaway from the song — ‘There’s a lot of words in that, man.’”

New Foo Fighter?

Even though Dave was the drummer for Nirvana, and Taylor Hawkins is the drummer for the Foo Fighters, Corden still thought he could hang with them in a drum battle. So they stopped at a Guitar Center to jam out on some drums. Corden quickly threw in the drumsticks, admitting defeat. The late night host, clearly, felt much more at home as the frontman. The guys got on a tiny little stage in Guitar Center and rocked Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up,” with Corden as the lead singer. And when the carpool was coming to an end, Corden was sad to leave his new bandmates. Although, the feeling wasn’t really mutual. When Corden told the guys he was bummed to leave the band, guitarist Chris Shiflett jokingly told him, “Well, we never let you in the band, technically.”

The Late Late Show With James Corden airs weeknights at 12:37 a.m. on CBS.
