Exclusive: Watch the Lyric Video for 3 Pill Morning's 'The Queen'

The cultural impact of Game of Thrones has had a big impact in the hard rock/metal world, where musicians have paid homage from guitar slinger Gus G's metalized version of the series' theme to The Sword's "To Take the Black" in honor of the Night's Watch. Minneapolis' 3 Pill Morning is another act that's not immune to the fantasy drama's charms, which played a role when the band binge watched the series while writing the track "The Queen."

"Maybe it was too much Game of Thrones, but that image just popped in, and as we wrote the song it transitioned from being about one person to the theme that everywhere you turn, there are people that always seem to be in other people's business and think they're above everyone else - social royalty," explains singer Jeff Stebbins. He notes that the song was inspired by multiple experiences he has had with people that are "manipulative, judgmental, narcissist. We've all dealt with it before … everyone has 'the queen' in their life at some point in time." He jokingly adds, "There's a list of people it could probably be dedicated to."

Stebbins says the band had tracked demos with rough music ideas, and the melody and concept hit him while he was listening to them while 3 Pill Morning was on tour. "The second we got done with the tour, we went into the studio and recorded it. It was raw and had this cool attitude to it," he recalls. "The demo vocal takes ended up being what we used at the end because it just had that vibe to it." He describes the song as having "a lot of cool textures" that gives it "an dark, electronic, old-school sound that makes you want to move."

Billboard has the exclusive premiere for the official lyric video to "The Queen." Watch it below:

"We sent the song over to our buddy Adam Standon with a couple notes, and he just ran with it," says Stebbins of the video. "It was really cool, the concept he came up with and how the lyric video tells its own story. We wanted something different than the standard lyric video that is exciting to watch and can invoke a different perspective each time you watch it."

According to Stebbins, the live reaction to "The Queen" "has been killer," so 3 Pill Morning is excited to introduce more people to it. It will get the chance when it returns to the road on Sept. 22 with Alter Bridge and Adelitas Way in support of its sophomore album, Never Look Back, which arrived in July and peaked at No. 15 on Hard Rock Albums and No. 14 on Heatseekers Albums.

"We're lucky to be a last-minute addition on this run, as Alter Bridge is definitely one of our favorites that's always been on our short list of bands we're hoping some day to hit the road with," says Stebbins. "Add Adelitas Way to the mix and it's a rock-n-roll party."
