Emo and pop-punk-influenced rockers You Blew It! have been going at it since 2009, and this Friday, they'll release their third full-length, Abendrot. That's a German word, and it roughly translates to "sunset," or at least the tapestry of colors you see in the sky during one. It's an allusion to the transitory phase the Orlando band sees itself in -- growing older, moving from basement-ready raw to more detailed songwriting.
For years, they've been lumped in with the so-called "emo revival," and they've toured with pop-punk standbys from Taking Back Sunday to the Wonder Years. But there comes a time when a band's got to grow beyond its scene, and for You Blew It!, that meant taking a deep breath and holding back. "We practice restraint more on this record than anything we've done before," vocalist-guitarist Tanner Jones tells Billboard. "Typically, we've chosen a more maximalist approach to songwriting -- guitars on guitars on guitars -- whereas Abendrot favors a comparably minimalistic ethos on some songs and more traditional techniques on others."
So you might say "guitars on guitars on guitars" has evolved into just… guitars. "We feel Abendrot bears an exciting uniqueness while maintaining signature hallmarks of You Blew It!'s past." Like its 2014 predecessor Keep Doing What You're Doing, the new album was produced by Into It. Over It.'s Evan Weiss, so there's indeed a sonic common thread. You can assess for yourself two days early, since the whole album is streaming exclusively via Billboard below.
Abendrot is available for pre-order here via Triple Crown Records. Keep Doing What You're Doing was You Blew It!'s first release to break the Billboard 200 albums chart (just squeaking in at 198) so next week, they'll see if they can keep that momentum going.
And the album isn't the You Blew It!'s only new project for sale. Upon hearing of Donald Trump's election last night, the band put a new t-shirt up for sale, pledging to donate all of its proceeds towards Planned Parenthood. Find the shirt (co-designed by Jones) below, and read the band's whole Facebook message here.
As straight cis males, now more than ever it's our duty to stand for those unable to. Proceeds donated to @PPact.https://t.co/6Afz6Mjx7S
