Drake Rules American Music Awards Nominations, Sets Record
Drake may have “started from the bottom,” but he’s setting new highs.
The rapper led nominees for the 2016 American Music Awards with 13 nods, braking the record for most AMAs nominations in a single year — surpassing Michael Jackson’s 11 noms in 1984.
Drake, who’s never won an AMA before, is up for artist of the year (along with Adele, Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Rihanna, Twenty One Pilots, Carrie Underwood, and The Weeknd), favorite male artist, favorite album, favorite rap artist, favorite rap song and favorite R&B song, among other awards.
His frequent collaborator Rihanna was close behind with seven nominations. Adele and Justin Bieber followed with five each, and Beyoncé and The Chainsmokers are each in the running for four prizes.
Singers Rachel Platten and Joe Jonas announced the nominees (and learned of their own nominations) Monday morning on “Good Morning America.”
Audiences can vote for artist of the year until Nov. 14 at 8:59 a.m. PT, and new artist of the year until Nov. 17 at 8:59 p.m. PT.
The AMAs will be broadcast live on ABC from Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater on Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. ET.
