Destiny's Child Stage Surprise Reunion at Stellar Awards

Destiny’s Child staged a surprise reunion at the 30th annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards Saturday night as Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams appeared together at Las Vegas’ Orleans Arena to perform Williams’ “Say Yes.” Beyoncé and Rowland previously collaborated on the studio version of Williams’ single, an EDM-inspired reimagining of the Nigerian gospel song “When Jesus Says Yes.”

"Say Yes" was nominated for three awards at the Stellar ceremony: Urban/Inspiration Single of the Year, Music Video of the Year and Song of the Year, with Williams picking up an extra nod in the Female Vocalist of the Year category for her gospel album Journey to Freedom. When the “Say Yes” single first arrived in May 2014 – although it was credited to “Michelle Williams featuring Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland” and not Destiny’s Child – it marked the first time the “Bills, Bills, Bills” trio had reunited since Beyoncé’s Super Bowl XLVII halftime show performance in February 2013.

According to Williams, the Destiny’s Child reunion on “Say Yes” happened accidentally. “They received an advance copy of the album and called, saying, ‘We love “When Jesus Says Yes”… there has to be a Destiny’s Child mix of the song,’” Williams said at the time. “Kelly did it and Beyoncé got right in the studio and did her part. I kept it a secret because I didn’t want anyone to know until it was time.”

Williams, Beyoncé and Rowland also filmed a “Say Yes” music video together. “It was so much fun. It was like we were little kids again,” Williams said of working on the video with Beyoncé and Rowland. “I have their back and they have mine. They have showed themselves to be loyal to me time after time. They have proven they are my sisters time and time again.”

Neither Williams nor Destiny’s Child were listed among the performers scheduled to appear at the Stellar Awards. Since the ceremony won’t air until April 5th – it’s currently scheduled to broadcast on TV One on Easter Sunday – high-quality video of the Destiny’s Child “Say Yes” reunion has yet to emerge, but you can a watch crowd-shot snippet above.
