David Lee Roth: ‘I Only Listen to Dance Music’

Van Halen’s David Lee Roth wasn’t kidding when he once sang “Dance the Night Away.” Although he’s back with his old band doing rock classics — like “Panama,” which Van Halen performed at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas Sunday night — apparently EDM is the music that really makes him jump nowadays.

“I only listen to dance music,” Diamond Dave told Yahoo Music on the BBMAs red carpet, during a random and impromptu joint interview with Yahoo and Billboard Japan. “Anybody who knows me will tell you that. I never listen to rock 'n’ roll. I love playing rock 'n’ roll, but I only listen to Beatport and what’s happening on the [dance] floor.”

This naturally begged the question: Would Roth ever do an EDM collaboration? “Of course! 'Jump,’ 'Panama,’ and a number of our songs have been remixed many times,” he said. “Katy Perry remixed 'Jump.’ There’s a remix of 'Jump’ in Japan for a Sapporo advertisement right now. Whitenoize did a remix to 'Jump.’ It’s endless, because it’s all danceable. We do 126 beats a minute.”

Maybe Dave can join his new BBMAs crush Nicki Minaj for a remix of “Panama/Hey Mama” sometime in the near future.
