Creed’s Scott Stapp Hints That He’s Stone Temple Pilots’ New Frontman

Stone Temple Pilots recently launched a public search for a new lead singer following the departure of Linkin Park's Chester Bennington and the death of band co-founder Scott Weiland. And it seems the remaining STP members believe they've found the man who can take them higher. Which singer are they welcoming with arms wide open?

Stone Temple Pilots recently launched a public search for a new lead singer following the departure of Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington and the death of band co-founder Scott Weiland. And it seems the remaining STP members believe they’ve found the man who can take them higher. Which singer are they welcoming with arms wide open? Per The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, it’s none other than Creed leader Scott Stapp.

Stapp gave an interview to Jason Bailey of Atlanta’s Rock 100.5 this morning to promote his current solo tour. And although he could “neither confirm nor deny” that he’s taking over vocal duties for STP, he heavily hinted that he was joining up with the band. Specifically, here’s what he said:

I’m excited to be back out on the road also been working on a new album with a new group of guys. Guys from some pretty well-known rock bands that you guys will know. I can’t really share the details about it but there’s a lot of good things going on that I can’t tell you till later in June when we’ll be making the announcement…This other band I’m jamming with is its own band with its own band name.

He then offered more details:

I will tell you this, there is a six-degree separation connection between this new project and the band you mentioned.

And when Bailey mentioned that Stapp is using the same tour bus Weiland died on, Stapp replied:

Dude you are just on point, aren’t you?

You’d think that after years of putting up with Weiland’s self-destructive behavior, STP would be hesitant to align themselves with Stapp, who’s demonstrated some erratic tendencies of his own in recent years. But it does make a certain amount of aesthetic sense given that STP helped pave the way for Creed’s success, and Stapp’s muscular bellow could definitely replicate some of Weiland’s low-register vocals. Whether or not STP are creating their own prison here, this will definitely be a fascinating study in middle-aged mercenary rock stardom.

UPDATE: Stone Temple Pilots have shot down these rumors on Twitter…
