Common Delivers Awesome, Unofficial Remix to Solange's 'Cranes in the Sky': Listen

Solange released her acclaimed album A Seat at the Table last month, gifting the younger Knowles her first No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Since the album's release, the breakout single "Cranes in the Sky" has already seen a remix from Canadian producer Kaytranada, whose edit got Solange's stamp of approval, and the self-love anthem resonated so well with Common that he recently added his own rhymes.

"Can't work it away, can't drink it away, can't laugh it away," Common raps, with aggression lingering on each line floating atop the track's soulful beat. "Kept my love locked down like it was all dreaded/ wishing for wings again so I can spread it."

Explaining his decision to remix Solange's single, Common told The Fader in an email, "Every once and a few years, there are certain songs that come out and have the sound of forever. 'Cranes in the Sky' is that song for me."

Solange's album A Seat at the Table is a powerful collection of songs that channeled the experiences her parents faced growing up in the South as well as her own growth as a black woman in America. Common's upcoming album Black America Again, like Solange's latest, boasts messages of empowerment and self-love, and he tells The Fader that his remix of "Cranes in the Sky" was "inspired by the love of art."

"Every time I listened to it, I keep wanting to hear it again and again," he said. "I started mumbling some words to it and then decided I want to write a verse."
