Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and promoters Goldenvoice have filed a lawsuit against Urban Outfitters for trademark infringement, as LA Weekly reports. The festival alleges that the Urban Outfitters subsidiary company Free People wrongfully used the “Coachella” name brand in item names and descriptions, and that the name was also used as a metatag to “misleadingly” lead customers to certain products (such as a “festival survival kit.) Coachella currently has a licensing deal with H&M, an example the festival uses to assert that it is “extremely selective” with allowing use of the name. Coachella claims it sent a cease-and-desist letter to Urban Outfitters last year that was ignored. The lawsuit demands that the clothing company be prevented by the court from using the name going forward, as well as damages that include all the profits made by Urban Outfitters from clothing with the “Coachella” name.
