Chris Martin made a special stop before Coldplay's concert in Manila, Philippines, on Tuesday (April 4), visiting a sick super fan at the hospital.
On his way to the Mall of Asia Concert Grounds, Martin spent some time with Ken Santiago, a medical student at the University of the Philippines-Manila suffering from stage 4 cancer, as ABS-CBN News reports. Santiago had hoped to attend Coldplay's concert that night and even woke up early to stand in line and buy a platinum ticket to the show, but his current condition prevented him from going.
Ken Santiago's older brother, Kheil Santiago, sought to help his Coldplay-loving sibling and penned an open letter on Facebook asking for help reaching the band.
"A week ago, he already turned over his Platinum ticket to my younger brother. He does not show he is sad, he said it's okay. But we can feel that he really wanted to be there. But due to his health condition that we cannot compromise. We, especially him accepted the fact that he can't be there in the most special concert of Coldplay for him," Kheil Santiago wrote. "I am sending you this open letter to ask a little favor if the band could just say 'hi' or a short message for him to make him feel better."
The message spread with more than 1,000 shares and managed to reach Rhizza Pascua, the head of Music Management International, the organizer of the Coldplay concert in Manila, who helped organize Martin's visit.
Although Santiago was unable to speak due to his illness, he communicated with Martin using a small white board. "I can't thank you enough," he reportedly wrote.
Martin also reportedly asked Santiago what song he would like the band to play at that night's concert and texted his bandmates to tell them to start practicing the Ghost Stories track "Ink."
As parting gifts, Martin gave Santiago his hat, as well as some Coldplay merchandise including a shirt, a bag and a copy of the band's latest album, A Head Full of Dreams.
