Cheap Trick revisited their classic treatise on the generation gap last night when they performed "Surrender" on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. The song, a hit single in Japan that paved the way for Cheap Trick's seminal 1978 concerts at Bukodan in Tokyo, retains all of its wry bite 35 years later. Guitarist Rick Nielsen executed leg kicks and mugged for the crowd, and he and bassist Tom Petersson helped singer Robin Zander belt the infectious sing-along chorus in full voice. Surrender, indeed, unconditionally.
