As senior vp content and programming for Cumulus Media and Westwood One, Mike McVay muses. "I get to be the showbiz guy and [oversee] the content for about 500 stations."
The longtime programming executive recently joined Billboard's country, Christian and gospel chart manager Jim Asker on the Chart Beat Podcast in Nashville to discuss a wide range of topics pertaining to McVay's scope of command, including "Nash Icon"-branded WSM-FM Nashville (an "adult contemporary station" version of country that Cumulus unveiled and programs nationally) and WNSH "Nash FM" New York, which in early 2013 brought the format back to the city after a 16-year gap between stations.
McVay also discusses the next wave of radio talent: "If we give young people the opportunity, if we show them where the jobs are, if we don't voice-track everywhere, if we don't eliminate every opportunity for new talent to grow, we will see them come into our business. They're out there."
Ultimately, in an on-demand era, why listen to radio? "It's two-fold," McVay believes. "One, it's time consumption. You get to a point where, 'I'm busy. I just want to turn on the radio today.' The older you become, the more your life responsibilities grow [and] the less time you have to create [playlists with] your favorites. The second part of it is music discovery. [Radio] is like a CD player on shuffle. You [never] know what songs are going to come up."
