Actor Chazz Palminteri's A Bronx Tale has evolved from a one-man off-Broadway show to a hit movie, and now it's a Broadway musical - one whose stars and composer stopped by the Billboard office for the "Billboard on Broadway" pre-Tony Awards performance series.
The behind-the-scenes talent of A Bronx Tale is formidable: Robert DeNiro co-directed with Broadway veteran Jerry Zaks; former Sony Music chairman Tommy Mottola is lead producer; the music is by the ever-prolific Alan Menken and his lyricist Glenn Slater; and Palminteri himself wrote the book. But the cast boasts plenty of Broadway bona fides as well: star Nick Cordero was Tony-nominated for his turn in Bullets Over Broadway in 2015, and leading lady Ariana DeBose portrayed "The Bullet" in Hamilton's original cast.
Palminteri's semi-autobiographical story of Calogero, an Italian-American boy growing up in the 1960s in the Belmont neighborhood of the Bronx, who becomes a kind of protégé to the local mob boss, might not have seemed an immediate fit for a musical adaptation. But Menken insists that once he figured out the right musical vocabulary, composing the score was smooth sailing. And as it turns out, both Palminteri and De Niro are big musical theater fans, too.
Watch as Menken introduces performances of "Look To Your Heart" (with Richard H. Blake as Lorenzo, Calogero's father, and Hudson Loverro as young Calogero); "One of the Great Ones" (with Cordero and Bobby Conte Thornton as Calogero); and "In a World Like This" (with Thornton and DeBose).
A Bronx Tale is currently running on Broadway at the Longacre Theatre.
