Why Jennifer Hudson’s ‘I Can’t Describe’ Sounds So Familiar
Jennifer Hudson is planning to deliver a dose of the old school during her performance on "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve With Ryan Seacrest 14."
The Grammy and Oscar Award-winning singer and actress will play her latest single, "I Can't Describe," which was influenced by a couple iconic soul singers.
"It's actually inspired from Evelyn Champagne King's song and also Chaka Khan," Jennifer told Yahoo Music during an exclusive video interview.
The song produced by Pharrell Williams and featuring a rap from T.I. pays homage to Evelyn's 1981 hit "I'm in Love" and Rufus and Chaka's 1979 smash "Do You Love What You Feel."
"God, it was an honor," Jennifer said about singing with the icons. "You know they're legends. I look up to that. I'm an old school girl. I like old school feeling. I thought it would be a great feeling to mix the old school Soul Train with the new school Soul Train so that's where the whole concept came from."
Jennifer said her forthcoming third solo album has a "nice, old school swag to it" and is "about the mood and the groove and real music." She also teams up with a fellow Chicago singer.
"I did another joint with R. Kelly called 'It's Your World,'" she said. "So you can look for that as well. It has that kinda Chicago thang on it with two Chicagoans. So just look for it. It's going to be really great."
"Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve With Ryan Seacrest 14" begins at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC and will feature performances from Robin Thicke, Jennifer Hudson, Enrique Iglesias, Blondie, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Miley Cyrus, and more.
