Daniel Miller is the founder of Mute records, a fiercely independent UK record label that is well known for its work with iconic electronic acts like Depeche Mode, Erasure, Yaz, Moby and Goldfrapp. He founded the label in 1978 after his single "Warm Leatherette/T.V.O.D." gained a great deal of attention under the moniker The Normal.
Synthesizer-based music was just starting to gain ground as the 1970s came to a close, and Miller started receiving demo tapes because he included his mailing address on the "Warm Leatherette" single. This is how Mute records began.
Mute has found great success since its humble beginnings, but in addition to heading up the successful indie label, Daniel Miller also found time to compose music, perform as a studio musician, and act as a producer for many acts, whether they were signed to Mute or not.
For this playlist I've chosen to focus on songs that Daniel Miller has a main production credit on. He's produced multiple albums by some of the bands in this list, but I've only selected one song from each in order to provide a wider overview of his work.
There are a ton of classics in this playlist as well as some new discoveries!
