After already having postponed the Boston stop on her Diamonds world tour in March due to illness, the pop star took the stage in Beantown a full hour and a half late Monday night on her makeup date.
Rihanna offered no explanation for her late arrival--and to make matters worse, her opening act, rapper A$AP Rocky, was a no-show reportedly due to illness. By the time she took the stage, she was greeted by a chorus of boos and jeers from the frustrated and bored crowd.
"Not how you want to begin your rescheduled concert," wryly noted the Boston Globe, further describing Rihanna's subsequent set as "listless" and "half-hearted."
There was plenty of speculation circulating as to why the singer was late to her very important date. Some considered it may have had to do with the premiere of her new tour documentary, Rihanna 777, which aired on Fox an hour prior to her stage time--and which she was blithely tweeting about as it debuted. Others thought it was because the basketball fan was watching the Chicago Bulls play Miami Heat in the NBA Eastern Conference semi-finals (she'd been seen at the Bulls-Nets game on Saturday). Still others theorized she may have been busy licking her wounds after on-again, off-again love Chris Brown announced to the press Monday that he was "officially going solo"--then showed up at the Met Gala that evening with a new lady by his side.
Regardless of the actual reason, Rihanna didn't offer any apology, and instead tweeted "#BOSTON I will never forget this night!!! I truly have deeper love for you now!!!"
Not surprisingly, many fans did not return her deep love. Plenty took to Twitter to vent about Rihanna's inconsiderate behavior, and a few added some sarcasm to the mix. "I'm over her," "Glad I didn't go," and "#waiting" were among the sentiments expressed.
This isn't the first time Rihanna has been tardy by any means. She has already racked up a string of late-shows on her tour to date, ranging in length--and made numerous headlines for her inconsiderate behavior on the 777 tour last year. It's also not the first time her opening act has bowed out for illness. In any case, here's hoping she makes it out on time for her Tuesday night show at Brooklyn's Barclays Center.
