R&B legend Charlie Wilson admits he’s been anxious to receive a special honor at the BET Awards, so he’s expecting to emotional Sunday when he is presented the event’s Cadillac Lifetime Achievement Award.
“It’s big, that’s real big,” he told Yahoo! Music. “I’ve been waiting on that one, anything from them. I never said anything, but to get something from them is big, and to have the Lifetime Achievement Award is the best to get. For this award, you have to have been doing it for a lifetime.”
Wilson released albums with The Gap Band, that also included his brothers Ronnie and the late Robert, from 1974 to 1999 and scored endless number of R&B classics, “Yearning For Your Love,” “Burn Rubber On Me,” “You Dropped A Bomb On Me,” “Outstanding,” and more. As a solo artist, he has released six solo albums, dating back to 1992 and landed several chart toppers. He released his most recent album, Love, Charlie, in January.
“It’s kinda hard to explain how happy I am,” he said. “I’m probably going to break down and cry in front of millions of people.”
Though Wilson can’t reveal which artists will participate in his tribute, he said he was humbled when he learned that the award show producers were flooded with requests to participate.
The honor makes Wilson recall the time he spent performing with his brothers. Robert, known as the Godfather of Bass Guitar, succumbed to a fatal heart attack in 2010. Ronnie is now a minister, having recently served as the Minister Of Worship at Community Bible Church in San Antonio, Texas.

“My oldest brother (Ronnie), he probably won’t be [there], he’s a minister, but he will be watching though, I’m sure,” Wilson said. “I had a wonderful time with my brothers. That was some really great times that we had ‘cause we lived our life out, the happiest part, on the stage.”
Wilson, who appears on Kanye West’s Yeezus album on the song “Bound 2,” will embark on a European tour on July 10, playing dates in Montpellier, France; London, UK; Rotterdam, Netherlands; Paris, France; and Basel, Switzerland.
The BET Awards air Sunday at 8/7c.
