British singer Ed Sheeran may have an enviable music career and be BFFs with Taylor Swift, but that wasn't always the case. The talented 22-year-old recently revealed that record companies told him he was "too chubby and too ginger to make it in music" when he was first starting out.

In an interview with SBTV for NCS, which helps teenagers in England build "self belief" and develop skills for work, the sensitive singer-songwriter explained that early in his musical career, hardly anyone attended his gigs and record labels practically laughed in his face.

"Every single label I had gone to at the time had told me this song wasn't a hit, this song wouldn't work and the fact that I was slightly chubby and ginger wasn’t a good 'marketing tool' for them," he said. "So, yeah, it did definitely feel like it wasn't going to happen."

Sheeran went on to explain that hard work and perseverance were the keys to his success, as well as the realization that singing and writing songs were where his main talents lied. "The way I maintained self-belief is that I knew I wasn't good at anything else, so what else was I going to do; and secondly with the whole look and songs that the labels rejected, I knew it was really important you stay true to yourself. Being an individual makes you stand out from the crowd."

Now that he's dueted with Elton John, written songs for One Direction, opened for Swift on her massive tour and was nominated for a Grammy, it seems that Sheeran knows of what he speaks.
