Toronto's reggae-fusion band Magic! has indeed cast a spell on music lovers. Seemingly right out of the box, their debut single "Rude" steadily etches itself up the charts. Lead singer Nasri Atweh, guitarist Mark Pellizzer, bassist Ben Spivak, and drummer Alex Tanas recently stopped by Yahoo to play stripped-down renditions of two of their songs, "Rude" and "Let Your Hair Down," and while they were in the Yahoo Music studio, they received the call that "Rude" had reached No. 1 on iTunes.
"Rude" exemplifies why Magic! don't mind comparisons to the Police. Their instrumentation falls right into place with a fun, ska groove remisniscent of Sting's classic '80s material... but it's also perfect for summer 2014.
Nasri knows his songwriting. As half of the Messengers (a duo with Adam Messinger), he co-penned Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never," Pitbull and Christina Aguilera's "Feel This Moment," Chris Brown's "Crawl," and dozens of other hits.
Magic! hope their debut album, Don't Kill the Magic, due out on July 1 on Sony Music Entertainment, will help lift listeners' spirits. "It's a stressful time out there, and people are struggling to find hope in balance," Nasri says. "This music is meant to put you in a good mood. We want to bring people together to have a good time."
