Monday is tax day, a fact that is more troubling for some of us than others. Count Ms. Lauryn Hill in the former group. She faces a massive tax bill after she failed to file tax returns from 2005 through 2007, when she reportedly raked in more than $1.8 million. She pleaded guilty to charges of tax evasion back in June 2012 and could end up in prison for several years.
The new twist is that Lauryn recently filed legal documents asking the court for mercy before her April 22 sentencing, according to TMZ. She's claiming she stopped paying Uncle Sam after "she withdrew from society at large due to what she perceived as manipulation and very real threats to herself and her family."
While she doesn't get specific about these "very real threats," that does explain why she went missing in action for a while after she became a huge star, first with the Fugees and then later as a solo artist.
Although not everyone is likely to buy Lauryn's excuse for not paying the tax man, she does make a valid point in her request to the court. She says she'll be able to pay off her tax bill much faster if she can continue to tour and record, which she won't be able to do behind bars. She last performed on Feb. 2, 2013, when she headlined the Ragga Muffin festival in Rotorua, New Zealand.
