Hip-Hop Dance Movie ‘Step Up Revolution’ Sponsors Local Competition

The battle dance movie series, Step Up, has inspired a real-life competition. On Sunday, July 22, Step Up Revolution teams up with the Hip-Hop Chess Federation to host its first-ever Your Own Step hip-hop event.

Youth and young adults will compete in multiple hip-hop styles, b-boy, b-girl, crumping, stepping, turfing and jerking for opportunities to win cash prizes, trophies and apparel.

Hip-Hop Chess Federation founder Adisa Banjoko said the event will send a positive message to kids. "Our organization believes that all elements of Hip-Hop (DJ'ing, rapping, graffiti and dance) are nonviolent forms of social empowerment," he said. "Step Up Revolution shows how young people can take their artistic passion and better their communities. The California dance community is overflowing with talent and we expect a huge turnout. Every minute young people are with the HHCF is another minute we keep these wonderful kids off the streets. San Jose is known for its club and dance scene. It's going to be powerful."

The event will mirror in concept part of the latest Step Up release, Step Up Revolution, in theaters July 27. Step Up Revolution stars dancers from previous Step Up films as well as So You Think You Can Dance, Hairspray, Fame,Stomp The Yard 2: Homecoming and America's Best Dance Crew.

An exclusive, extended trailer of Step Up Revolution will be premiered at the event.

Your Own Step will take place Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at City of San Jose Alum Rock Center, 137 North White Road, San Jose, Ca. For Your Own Step info, including registration, visit: http://idcmag.com/stepup_comp.html
