Wedding bells are ringing for rock power couple Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger -- at some point. Lavigne sat down with the true "Queen of All Media" Ryan Seacrest, on KIIS FM's On Air With Ryan Seacrest to chat about their upcoming nuptials and how the adorable proposal went down. But the actual date of the wedding stayed a close kept secret.
Dragged into the interview from the spectator's corner, all Kroeger could say about the big day was, "I can’t tell you [the date] but we’re planning it.” Chad joked, “every man knows we get very little participation in the wedding, and these are goods things. Or else Steel Panther ends up playing.” Considering the oh-so-romantic Steel Panther song that Kroeger was featured on is called "It Won't Suck Itself", it's probably for the best.
In fact, a lot of wedding details are being kept from Kroeger! Lavigne said that the guest list consisted of “a lot of close friends and family, it’s sort of smaller but it’s going to be quite spectacular." She then elaborated, "There’s a theme to it, we’re going pretty big; but Chad doesn’t even know everything yet!” Theme wedding? We're guessing/hoping there will be a lot of skulls and stripes.
But against all odds, including a 10-year age difference, (Kroeger, 37; Lavigne, 27) the oft-maligned Nickelback frontman and pop-punk princess do appear to be completely in love.
Kroeger gushed about their relationship, which blossomed in the studio. He said, “I think it evolved into this wonderful thing. When you’re sitting there, singing across from somebody into the microphone and singing love songs and you start developing these feelings for that person, and it just blossomed into this thing and last summer we started dating and I didn’t take long, I got down on one knee.”
Kroeger officially proposed just a month into their relationship, but Lavigne mentioned half-jokingly, "We started dating, and the next day he's like, 'You know I'm gonna marry you.' And I said, 'I know'. Like, it was just one of those things we knew"
In fact, Kroeger popped the question as soon as he purchased Lavigne's massive 14-karat diamond ring, fearing he'd lose it, or lose his nerve. Kroeger admitted, "You can travel the world and sing songs to thousands of people and not even have your heartbeat raised at all. You get down on one knee and commit yourself to a woman for the rest of your life? I was like, very nervous."
So how did the proposal go down?
“The only thing that was weird was we usually go to the studio together and he had gone before me," Lavigne recounted. "And I have been making this scrapbook of my time in the studio with a Polaroid camera... I walked into the studio and he was putting a picture in to the book and I was like ‘What is he doing?' And all of a sudden I walk over and he had taken a photo of himself holding the ring box and put the Polaroid in my scrapbook. And because I had stickers everywhere he put in ‘Will you marry me?’ It was really romantic.”
This is the second marriage for both; Lavigne was married to Sum 41 punker Deryck Whibley for three years and Kroeger was married to hair salon owner Marianne Gurick for seven years. Both couples got divorced in 2009.
