The Wanted singer Nathan Sykes is celebrating his birthday in an unusual way—by undergoing throat surgery.
The band announced that the British heartthrob will be taking a break from the group to undergo surgery in Los Angeles on Thursday, his 20th birthday.
“Our lil Nath has to go in for an operation on his throat, on his birthday to make him better,” the band posted on its Facebook page. “So please join us in wishing our brother and our friend well. Get well soon Nath, we love ya!”
Countless fans, (mostly female) commented on the post, wishing him a happy birthday and a speedy recovery.
Sykes’ exact condition has not been disclosed, but The Daily Mail reported that he’s suffering from a vocal cord hemorrhage – the same condition that recently plagued singer Adele – and that he won’t be able to talk for at least a month, let alone sing.
The popular boy band has been working on a studio album and is currently taping a reality show for E!, which is set to debut in June. The four remaining members said they plan to continue fulfilling their commitments while Sykes recovers -- a huge relief to their legions of swooning fans.
Billboard published the official statement from the band’s rep: "We can confirm that The Wanted's Nathan Sykes will under go specialist throat surgery on Thursday 18th April in Los Angeles and as such will be taking unforeseen hiatus from The Wanted. The priority for Nathan, his label and management is that he is given time to recover and receive the best treatment possible. The remaining four members of The Wanted will continue fulfilling the bands promotional commitments across the world."
