Apparently knowing when to let go is part of The Art of Letting Go. Mariah Carey had planned to release her next album (titled The Art of Letting Go) on July 27. But on Monday, Carey — and perhaps her marketing team — had second thoughts. The album has now been delayed indefinitely.
Carey took to Twitter to explain the delay, writing "I just don't feel I would be doing it justice to release it on 7/23." And then adding, "I want to give you this album as it's meant to be heard. When I'm ready, you'll be the first 2 know!"
But there might be other reasons for the delay. The album's first single, the much-hyped "#Beautiful" featuring Miguel, has stalled at No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100, despite a whole lot of promotion. Aside from a strong push at radio, the steamy video clip for the song premiered on "American Idol," on which Mariah served as a judge, before moving to Vevo and YouTube for on-demand viewing.
While a top-15 single is nothing to scoff at for most artists, Mariah isn't just any artist. She's had 18 Hot 100 chart-toppers over her career, the most of any solo artist and with all recording acts, she's second to only to the Beatles, who had 20, Billboard reports. In addition, 27 of her 44 Hot 100 singles have reached the top 10, but it's been a while since she's hit it. She last top 10 hit, "Obsessed," peaked at No. 7 in 2009, while she last topped the chart with "Touch My Body" in 2008.
Perhaps The Art of Letting Go means making sure you have the goods to ensure you'll reach your previous chart highs.
