Pistol Annies member Ashley Monroe recently struck out on her own with the release of her solo album Like a Rose, which included the the raucous stomper "Weed Instead of Roses." Now you can take an exclusive look at Monroe putting an intimate, but plenty cheeky and sweet, spin on a live acoustic rendition of the song. The coquettish hook came to the then 19-year-old singer while she was on her way to a co-writing session with Sally Barris and Jon McElroy.
"I went in and was like, 'Guys, it's the craziest thing. I just heard this title in my head. "Give Me Weed Instead of Roses,'" Monroe recalls. "Jon was like, 'I love it!' and Sally was like, 'Oh, that's funny.' I was like, 'Oh Sally, let's just write it and see what happens.' We wrote this song and somehow it got on one of the compilations to Vince [Gill]! Vince said he wouldn't do the record unless we cut it. I was like 'What are you and Amy [Grant] doing?'"
