Sting (four nominations)

Sting has received more Album of the Year nominations than anyone else in Grammy history that has never actually won the darn thing. The Englishman lost twice to pop/R&B crossover titans and twice to fellow British pop stars. The Police’s fifth and final studio album, 'Synchronicity,' lost to Michael Jackson’s 'Thriller' (1983). Sting’s solo debut, 'The Dream of the Blue Turtles,' lost to Phil Collins’s 'No Jacket Required' (1985). His second solo album, '…Nothing Like the Sun,' lost to George Michael’s 'Faith' (1988). His fourth solo album, 'Ten Summoner’s Tales,' lost to Whitney Houston’s 'The Bodyguard' soundtrack (1993). Still, Sting has won 16 Grammys — five with the Police and 11 on his own.

Always a Bridesmaid: Artists Who Have Received the Most Grammy Noms for Album of the Year — Without Ever Winning

Adele’s 25 and Beyoncé’s Lemonade are almost certain to be among the finalists for Album of the Year when the Grammy nominations are announced on Dec. 6. Adele has won before in the category, but Beyoncé lost both times she was nominated. If she loses for a third time, Beyoncé (and her fans) would doubtless be disappointed, but she’d actually be in very good company. Over the years, eight artists have received three or more Album of the Year nominations without bringing home that top prize. Take a look.
