Alanis Morissette Shows Demi Lovato How It’s Done at American Music Awards
Although her groundbreaking album, Jagged Little Pill, was released a full 20 years ago, Alanis Morissette undoubtedly remains an indelible influence on young female artists today – as evidenced by her duet with Demi Lovato of her defining girl-anthem hit, “You Oughta Know,” on the 2015 American Music Awards stage November 22.
The two singers paired off energetically, both dressed in black, striding across the stage and matching each other’s fierce gazes. Lovato, who’d already commanded the audience earlier in the evening with a raging rendition of her new single, “Confident,” let Morissette take the lead, while the crowd rewarded the duet with a standing ovation.
This wasn’t the first time this year Morissette won attention from the next musical generation for her influence. In August, the singer-songwriter received the ultimate praise: A guest stint on stage with Taylor Swift on on a stop of the younger singer’s 1989 tour.
“I think it’s fair to say that so many of the female singer-songwriters of my generation, including myself, would not write the way that we do without her and her music,” Swift announced to the audience, amid cheers.
Lovato, who just released her fifth album, also titled Confident, last month, has been paying homage to ‘90s acts of late, having recently paired up with Third Eye Blind’s Stephan Jenkins at the iHeartRadio Music Festival to deliver a live rendition of his band’s 1997 hit “Jumper.”
Morissette received the Favorite female pop-rock artist award at the 1996 American Music Awards. Jagged Little Pill was recently re-released on iTunes to commemorate the two-decade milestone of its enduring musical significance.
