Adele Sparks Controversy Over ‘Black Friends’ Comment at Grammys
Adele had a big night at the Grammys, winning a total of five awards. But on Monday morning, the British singer faced some backlash for a comment she made while accepting the Album of the Year award.
While thanking her fans, Adele also acknowledged Beyoncé, who was nominated in the same category. She said, “My artist of my life is Beyoncé. And this album for me, the Lemonade album, was just so monumental.”
She went on to say, “The way that you make me and my friends feel, the way you make my black friends feel is empowering. You make them stand up for themselves. And I love you. I always have, and I always will.”
There’s been an uproar on social media around Adele using the words “black friends.” Some people said her words were offensive, but there were also some who showed their support. Others even praised Adele for acknowledging Lemonade and the significance of Beyoncé’s work.
Adele almost had it … right up until "the way you make my black friends feel." Oof.

Adele also knew lemonade wasn't for HER or white women. So her saying "my black friends" was so important. She knew her place.

Adele just took the comments too far lol. She had to say black friends and include empowerment.

I didn’t find much wrong with Adele calling out what LEMONADE meant to her Black friends. Bey made that for US. She knows that.
