Without a doubt, the hottest rapper in the world right now is Kendrick Lamar. He just dropped his fourth album, Damn, aptly-titled since that's the only thing anyone on my Facebook feed could think to say about it. It's another triumph from an already mythic man. It delves deeper into our collective social consciousness, speaks more directly to the trials of the black community in America, and continues to take hip-hop to higher levels of art and expression.
Damn is as compelling as it is cool, and it's full of heaters - an important distinction, because while Lamar is absolutely a conceptual mind, he's also a dude that knows how to feed radio. Ever since Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, Kendrick's been a favorite for dance and trap remixes. While we wait for producers to get their claws on Damn's hottest cuts, let's reminisce about the hottest Kendrick Lamar songs remixed that already exist.
Kendrick Lamar - "Swimming Pools" (BMB SPACEKID remix)
Lamar's rhymes are heady, and we'd venture to guess he can fuck with some heady beats. This interstellar take on "Swimming Pools" will launch your hazy brain into the stratosphere. Put this one on when it's time to go for a smoke and a drive, or whenever you're just looking to melt into a fuzzy chair.
Kendrick Lamar - "M.A.A.D. City" (Eprom Remix)
This gritty take on the eponymous track of Lamar's first instant classic comes in hard with the video game grime. You may have heard it making the rounds in festival sets when it dropped in 2014. It makes fun use of everyone's favorite "yak"-along, and it's got the bass that makes the booties go boom.
Kendrick Lamar x Tycho - "Vibe Walk" (Break Science Remix)
Q: What happens when you put Tycho's "A Walk" up against Kendrick Lamar's song "Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe," then let Break Science work his mysterious wonders all over the mash-up? A: You get a vibe so steady and whimsical, it's downright bullet proof. Try to kill it. You can't.
Kendrick Lamar - "ADHD" (Nadus remix)
This take on a classic cut from Kendrick's debut album Section.80 gets the dance floor poppin' with a beat bold enough for the juke junky in you. This is club music for feet with "ADHD." It might not feature a ton of Lamar's vocals, but any true fan knows this song as soon as the dreamy chords come in.
Kendrick Lamar - "Money Trees" (Amp remix)
"Money Trees" is an absolute favorite of mine, and this remix pumps the volume with heavy drum'n'bass rhythms. It's not coming at you with breakneck speeds. It's still got that laid back vibe. It's just a bit kicked up, which is perfect for a dance floor vibe.
Kendrick Lamar - "I" (Carneyval & INSTRUM Remix)
Now what we have here is a mixture of a cover and a remix. A soulful male vocal helps turn this Kendrick Lamar song off To Pimp a Butterfly into an uplifting house anthem. The beat is steady with lots of fun textural elements. It's cinematic, and we have to think Lamar would be cool with this
Mayor Hawthorne with Kendrick Lamar - "Crime" (Vice Remix)
Let's finish strong with a fun take on a Kendrick feature. Lamar is all over this Mayor Hawthorne tune, and this colorful, 808-infused remix shows his flows fit beautifully on top of all manner of rhythms. The drop on this one is particularly funky, too.
