This summer is shaping up to be the one to beat for fans of 1990s nostalgia. The Summerland Tour is returning, and this time it features Everclear, Live, Filter and Sponge. It hits 30 U.S. cities starting May 29th in Fort Meyers, Florida and wraps up July 28th in Kansas City, Missouri.
"Last year's Summerland was a blast," Everclear frontman Art Alexakis said in a statement. "This year, we've brought a decidedly edgier flavor bill to satisfy all of the fans of Nineties rock & roll out there. It's going to be an amazing summer night every night on Summerland 2013: Alternative Guitars."
The tour has a lot of competition for the 1990s nostalgia dollar. Mark McGrath's inaugural Under the Sun Tour is traveling across America with Sugar Ray, Smash Mouth, Gin Blossoms, Vertical Horizon and Fastball. Sugar Ray were part of the Summerland Tour last year but declined to participate again. "Unfortunately, Art and I have different ideas about what the tour is about," McGrath recently told Rolling Stone. "He's doing his own thing now."
There's also the Last Summer on Earth Tour featuring Barenaked Ladies, Ben Folds Five and Guster. Nineties boy-band fans can also check out the Package Tour with New Kids on the Block, Boyz II Men and 98 Degrees.
All of the bands on the Summerland tour are missing key members. Live is hitting the road without frontman Ed Kowalczyk, and Art Alexakis is the only member of Everclear remaining from the classic lineup. Filter still has original singer Richard Patrick, but the rest of the group members joined in the past couple of years. Sponge singer Vinnie Dombroski is still at the helm, but the rest of the group joined in the 2000s.
